What to put on a freelance invoice: a checklist
By AMCode. A plain checklist of the fields a freelance invoice commonly includes.
- The word "Invoice" and a unique invoice number (sequential, e.g. 2026-001).
- Issue date and due date, plus your payment terms (e.g. net 14).
- Your details: name or business name, address, contact email.
- Client details: name, company, billing address.
- Line items: description, date or period, hours or quantity, rate, amount.
- Subtotal, tax (if you charge it) and total, with the currency stated.
- How to pay: bank transfer details or payment link.
- Late-payment note if you agreed one with the client.
Requirements differ by country, so check your local rules or ask an accountant for anything beyond this checklist.
